Hard Cover Wire Bound BooksWire bound documents with hard covers. This is a premium product, bound with thick 2:1 wires and available with a fabric covered or colour printed cover. Both the fabric and laminate coated colour printed covers are available with hot foil (including gold and silver) printing. Ideal for use as Journals, Books, Notebooks. Instant Quote:You can choose any quantity you like from 1 These are the size books that you can choose from:
PLEASE NOTE: these are the book block sizes, covers are slightly larger. See the artwork preparation guide for more details. We can also do custom sizes where technically possible, but these will cost more. Have a chat with the helpdesk on 01452 751900 to discuss. Portrait means that the width is less than the height, landscape means that the width is greater than the height. Think of paintings on a wall, landscape paintings tend to be wider than they are tall, portraits tend to be narrower than they are tall. It's important to note that when we refer to orientation, this governs which edge of the book is punched and bound. Portrait orientation has the long edge bound, Landscape has the short edge bound. Here are some further notes that may help you. Please remember that we don't check your book design or proof read your book for you. You should have sorted all of this out in the copy editing stage of creating your book. Hopefully these notes might help you to catch a few last minute errors BEFORE they go to print.
These are the wire colours that we stock. It is possible to get other colours, but please bear in mind that this can be expensive for small orders. Please have a chat with the helpdesk to discuss your options. Custom full colour print. These are printed hard covers with a layer of protective laminate on the top. The covers are custom printed with your own artwork, or we can design your cover for you (extra charges apply). Material / Cloth. We can custom manufacture covers with various different types of finish. For more help about this, select this option and then click on the information button next to the "Cover material" option. Material and Cloth covers. We can custom manufacture cases with various different types of finish. There are a wide variety of other materials that range from the beautiful and unusual to the frankly outlandish! If you have a interesting project then please get in touch with the helpdesk and we can discuss options. We love making beautiful things, but bear in mind that these are custom made hardback books using high quality materials specially ordered in to your requirements. If you'd like to see some pictures of the cover materials, CLICK HERE to go to the swatch page We're happy to also send you samples, but you will need to speak to the helpdesk on 01452 751900 so that you can discuss what samples you need. In this help section, we refer to "digital" and "premium" hot foil printing. You can learn about the differences between these processes in the relevant help section, but in this section we explain which materials are suitable for which process. Stock materials: We buy most of our stock materials directly from FiberMark Red Bridge in the UK. The UK has a long history of manufacturing high quality book binding materials and the Fibremark Red Bridge manufacturing plant in Bolton exports over 80% of their production. Over the years, members of Inky's team have visited other book printers and binderies across Europe and interestingly what we call "Library Buckram" here in the UK is sometimes just called "English Buckram" overseas. Although we stock thousands of kilometers of book cloth and embossed cover paper, there is a lot more available! So, if you have something different in mind, please have a chat with the helpdesk, who can talk you through what is possible. Please bear in mind that it can be expensive to order in a special material for a short run of books, so that may limit what is practical. For some combinations of colours and material, we have to order in a minimum quantity of many thousands of square meters. Thankfully there are many other options where we can obtain smaller quantities!
NOTE 1: Are you interested in a leather bound book? In general there are varying degrees of what might be loosely called "leather" when binding books. At the very top, you have genuine leather. High quality book leather is typically made from goatskin or sheepskin. The production of this leather alone is a highly skilled and vanishingly rare craft. When you come to the production of the book cases, that really can only be described as an art form combining leather working and book binding skills. Imagine someone custom making a fine leather handbag for you, then hand decorating it with embossing and gold foil. Making your leather book case (AKA the cover) is a lot more complicated than that! Sadly, these types of books are rarely made anymore as they are just too expensive for most projects. If this is what you want, then we salute you and recommend our friends at the Ludlow Book Binders. They are one of the last bastions of premium British hand book binding. We would be happy to print the book blocks for you on our shiny state of the art digital presses though, as they don't do that bit. Somewhere around the middle you have Bonded Leather. This is largely made up from genuine leather fibres, so that it looks, smells and feels quite a lot like genuine leather. It is available embossed with a variety of leather patterns. This material is still expensive, but expensive like a BMW, not expensive like a Rolls Royce. As it is a manufactured product, it can be used with modern case making machinery by skilled book binders. This makes it a product that modern book makers like us here at Inky can manufacture. As you can imagine, there are still wide variations in the quality of bonded leather available, but a reputable UK book binder will use good quality genuine bonded leather. If you are interested in this, speak to the helpdesk and we can discuss the options with you. Incidentally, bonded leather like this is generally a lot higher quality than most of the "leather" goods you will see in the shops (yes, I am talking about sofas). Sitting slightly below the bonded leather is leathercloth. To a casual observer, this does look and feel like genuine leather and can be a high quality product in it's own right. A good quality version will also stand up to many years of use. It isn't leather though, so will not smell like leather or pass an informed inspection. Again, speak to us if you are interested in this product. Below that comes a coated paper with an embossed leather pattern. Almost all "leather" bound books you see in the shops are in fact, this. There is generally a acrylic/PVC type coating to the paper and this gives the paper a dull shine and some protection from wear. If material from a quality manufacturer is chosen, this is a good quality product in it's own right. It will not smell like leather or last like leather. It does look quite a lot like leather though! We stock a wide range of colours in a high quality version of this product - Acrolin pattern Pampilona 29. These are the colours that we stock. As you can see, we hold a lot of stock! We can special order in some different colours, but bear in mind that each colour of each type of material is a roll at least a meter wide and 100 meters long, so the additional cost can be quite high. We can also manufacture pretty much any colour under the sun, but due to the manufacturing process, we have to have 1-2 kilometers of material made. Ideal if you are launching a whole new product, but not suitable for a very short run unless you have very deep pockets! You can choose from either a gloss, matt or soft touch protective laminate. This type of book cover must have a protective laminate. Soft touch laminate is a matt laminate, but with a tactile soft finish. This is a very fashionable and doesn't mark as easily as matt laminate. We can hot foil print onto any book case (cover). It is REALLY important that you read the artwork preparation guide to understand how this works, how to send us your artwork and where you can print. For example, we cannot print right up to the edge of the case. We offer two different types of hot foiling.
Please bear in mind the following advice for PREMIUM foiling.
You are welcome to phone the helpdesk and ask for some foiled samples. Digital foiling is currently available in (shiny) Gold colour and (shiny) Silver. If you need a different colour, check out the premium foiling option. Digital hot foiling can be quite an expensive process. So, if you only need a small area, we will only charge for that small area. There are therefore two options available to you. The small (or "Title") area is ONE section that can go the entire width of the cover (less 5mm from each edge) and a maximum of 50mm high. The full coverage allows you to print anywhere on the front cover (less 5mm from all edges). Please read the artwork preparation guide for more details. If you are not clear on anything after reading the artwork preparation guide, please have a chat with the helpdesk on 01452 751900. This item lists all of the foil colours that we currently stock. Make sure that you also read the help for "Hot foil cover", as this includes important information about what can be achieved. It is possible for us to special order in different colour foils. This is not a cheap option, but may be worth while if you want a specific colour for a longer run of books. Please call the Helpdesk to discuss your options if this is of interest. I'm not going to mollycoddle you, this is a difficult bit to get your head around. Premium hot foiling uses engraved copper or brass dies, depending on the individual job. One thing that's worth remembering is that the dies are expensive, but they are usually re-usable. So if you ask us to store the die for you in case of a reprint, we'll take the cost of the die off of your reprint orders. Please be realistic, we're not some enormous vault of copper and brass dies. We're happy to keep your die for a few months if you ask us to, but don't expect that we'll be able to dig it up years later as it will have been recycled. The cost of hot foiling your covers breaks down into: the die, makeready (setting up the hot foil press, ready to run) and the running time on the press (measured in the number of impressions). What you are selecting with this option is the SIZE of the die as there is no need to pay for a larger die than you require. There is a minimum die size of 14 square inches. We highly recommend that you use this to get a general idea of cost and then have the Helpdesk work out the exact die size for you. Engraved dies are still priced and specified in square inches! To calculate the size of your die yourself, read on. There are a few additional items to remember before starting.
Here is how to calculate the size of your die: Measure the size of your artwork in the X-axis in inches. Add 0.5 inch to this dimension. Round UP to the nearest half inch. Measure the size of your artwork in the Y-axis in inches. Add 0.5 inch to this dimension. Round UP to the nearest half inch. Multiply the two dimensions together, this is your die size. Example:
What are end papers? The hard covers have the outside either covered with a material (fabric, embossed paper, etc.) or a full colour printed and laminated sheet. This wraps around the edge of the cover and onto the inside a little way. We also glue on a sheet of paper onto the inside of the covers, this is called an end paper. Your options for end papers are:
There are lots of other things that are POSSIBLE. For instance we could hot foil your end paper. You need to speak to us if you want an option that's not available here and we can discuss what's possible. Corner protectors do stop the pointy edges of your book from getting damaged, but mainly people choose these because they look great. These corner protectors are a nice chunky 22mm long and you can choose gold coloured, silver coloured or black. What do they look like, well a picture or two is better than words... Elastic closures stop your book coming open, handy if it's often put into a bag. Loose and riveted bands are closed with a smart clip. You can choose silver, gold or black colour clips to match or contrast with your elastic.
These are all of our stock elastic colours. Please note that we cannot guarantee an exact match between ribbon and elastic colours. You are welcome to request samples before ordering. We can also special order in some other elastic colours, please have a chat with the helpdesk if this is of interest. Elastic closures are joined together with a smart metal clip. You can chose from silver (nickel), gold or black (gunmetal) colour for the clip. Likewise if you have selected the elastic closure with eyelets, the eyelets are finished in a colour to match the clip. We are happy to send out samples of our printing for you see before you order. Please call the helpdesk to discuss your requirements. There are four different options available:
By default, all sheets (leaves) in your book are printed double sided. So 100 pages are printed on 50 sheets of paper in your book. Sometimes people just want the front of each sheet printed and for us to leave the back of the sheet blank. If you choose the "Single Sided" option, that's what you will get. So, if you order "Single Sided" printing and 100 pages, you will get 100 sheets of paper inside your book, all with the front side printed and the rear side blank. Confused over which is the "front" of a sheet of paper in your book? In printing jargon, we are specifically referring to "Recto"" pages. In languages written from left to right, a recto page is on the right hand side when a book is open. It is printed on the "front" of a leaf. Also in languages written from left to right, a verso page is on the left hand side when a book is open. It is the "back" of a leaf. Number of black & white pages. Please note that this is pages, not sheets. For example: a book with 100 sheets of paper inside (leaves) is a 200 page book. If you have any blank pages, for example before the start of a chapter, you must count the blank page as a black & white page. If you want ALL of the reverse (verso) sides of the leaves in your book left blank, please also look at the "Inner pages are... Double sided / Single sided" option. Number of colour pages. This is the paper that your book block (the pages of your book) will be printed on. We are happy to send out paper samples for you see before you order. Please call the helpdesk to discuss your requirements. All of our paper options are high quality and suitable for both colour and black & white printing. The standard options are:
If you need an alternative paper, please call the helpdesk for a chat to discuss options. NOTES:
These tabbed dividers are white card and can have text printed on the tab in black. PDF (online soft proof). This is a technical process to check that your artwork is printable and to prepare it for printing as far as possible. We aim to provide your soft proof within 4 working hours and you will get an email notification when it is ready. The PDF that you send us (your artwork) has a pre-flight check carried out and a number of automatic corrections may also be made if necessary. The resulting soft proof is a PDF that is viewable through your admin area of the web site. It is very important that you carefully review your soft proof and the pre-flight report that we send to you. If your artwork fails our preflight checks you will not get a proof, but you will get a report letting you know what is wrong with your file. You can then fix the problem and resubmit your artwork. We may warn you about potential problems with your artwork. In this case, your artwork CAN be printed and you will get a proof to check. You should carefully check the warnings in your report before deciding whether to proceed or submit new artwork. Your first soft proof is included in the price of your order. If you find that you need to make alterations to your artwork and ask us to create another proof, we may make a small charge for each additional soft proof. Please contact the helpdesk to arrange payment if you need additional proofs. Remember, this is a technical file check, we don't proof read or check your design! If you want a hard copy proof, please just order a single book. To read more about proofs, read the help section: HELP > ARTWORK > PROOFS (opens in a new window) These are working days to print. Our standard print service is 5 working days to print. You can pay a premium if you want your order on the express 2 day to print service. You cannot combine Premium foiling with the express service as there isn't enough time to engrave the dies. Please remember to add transit (delivery) time to this and remember that these are working days to print and do not include weekends or bank holidays. Unless you approve your order by 10am, the day that you approve your proof does not count in the time to print. We cannot schedule your job to print until you have approved your proof. If you do not have a credit account with us, you will also need to pay for your job before we can schedule your job to print Delivery is normally the next working day AFTER the job is printed.
